This original etching was created on the bark of a paper birch tree I stumbled upon in the bush on my reserve. Because I was new to harvesting birch bark and had never tried etching it before, I figured the already fallen tree was a perfect opportunity to teach myself the process.
To ensure the longevity and original look of the etching, here are some tips for after you receive your one-of-a-kind piece:
- When handling the etchings, it's important to have clean, dry hands.
- Birch bark is flexible, but can be damaged under strain or pressure. Ensure that the etchings are not bent, folded, or pressed under heavy objects.
- Birch bark can absorb moisture, which could lead to mold or mildew. It's best to keep the etchings away from damp areas like bathrooms or basements.
- Direct sunlight can cause the birch bark to fade and become brittle over time. It's best to display or store the etchings in a place where they will be shielded from direct sunlight. I recommend using a shadow box or a frame with sufficient depth to avoid pressing against the glass.
